Cathedral Choir

St Patrick's Cathedral Choir scholarships are offered by the Archdiocese of Melbourne in conjunction with St Kevin's College to support the liturgical music program of St Patrick's Cathedral. Alongside their involvement in the musical and spiritual life of the Cathedral, scholarship holders also contribute to the musical activities of the College. The scholarship scheme provides an opportunity for boys with appropriate musical talent to receive an academic education of the highest quality at one of Melbourne's finest Catholic schools, alongside an exceptional musical education both at the Cathedral and at St Kevin's College.

To be eligible to apply for these scholarships, boys must be Catholic and able to enrol in Year 5 at St Kevin's College in the year in which the scholarship is taken up. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of an audition and students must satisfy normal entrance requirements at the College. The audition is conducted by the Director of the Cathedral Choir, who passes on a list to the Principal. The Principal will make the final decision as to which applicants will be formally interviewed and offered places. Auditions are held in May of each year.

The closing date for this choral scholarships is Friday, May 14, 2021, with the Auditions to be an online video submission due on Saturday, May 22, 2021.

The Director of the Choir, Dr Philip Matthias, will contact all families of applicants after the closing date to explain the process and organize an audition time.

The short documentary video above offers an inspiring snapshot of the Choristers in St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir, East Melbourne. Educated at St Kevin’s College in Toorak, the boys and young men of the Cathedral Choir enjoy a first class musical education lead by the Cathedral Choir director, Dr Daryl Barclay and Organist, Mr Dion Henman.

There’ have been choirs at St Patrick’s Cathedral since the middle of the nineteenth century, but the present Cathedral Choir of boys and men was founded in 1939, when the Vienna Mozart Boys Choir found itself stranded in Australia at the outbreak of war. The choir now comprises between 50 and 60 members, who sing regularly on Sunday mornings in the Cathedral at the 11.00am Solemn Mass. They also sing at other major services in the Cathedral, including ordinations, and the services of Christmas, Holy Week and Easter.

The boys of the choir are normally admitted at the start of Year 5. They all attend St Kevin’s College in Toorak through to Year 12 with the assistance of a generous scholarship offered by the Archdiocese in association with St Kevin’s College. There is a rigorous weekly schedule of rehearsals, some of which are conducted at the College.
