Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.  Through baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission…(Catechism of the Catholic Church n. 1213)

The Sacrament of Baptism at St Patrick’s Cathedral with is held once per month. Please contact the Cathedral Office for enquiries

The number of children being baptised at any one ceremony is limited to SIX candidates.

It is most important for parent(s) to attend the Baptismal preparation evening which is for an hour and is held on a nominated Wednesday evening at 7:00pm in the Lansdowne Rooms, which is part of the Cardinal Knox Centre;(cnr of Albert Street and Lansdowne Street East Melbourne; parking available in the Cathedral Carpark, opposite the Fitzroy Gardens).
Please note that notifications for Baptisms ought to be arranged at least three months in advance. If you do not live within the Cathedral parish, we ask that you make contact with your own local Catholic Parish Church to seek permission for us to baptise the child here and not in the local parish.

It is customary to make an offering to the Church on the occasion of your child’s Baptism. The stipend for Baptisms is $100 for St Patrick’s Cathedral
If you decide to have your child baptised here at the Cathedral, please contact the Parish Office on (03) 9662 2233.
